I would say the XD's recoil isn't too bad, all things considered. For example, I would say my XD40 tactical (5") is no worse than an 1911. My XD40 subcompact (3") has a bit more recoil, but I find it to be much more controllable than a Glock 23. On the subcompact, [...]

Yeah, I would say the tactical is a bit big to carry. the subcompact is very concealable, and even the 4" service can be concealed pretty well.
